Uniform Policy

Page history last edited by Patti Duke 13 years, 8 months ago

Parents and students need to be aware that principals in the Birmingham City School System are being asked to enforce the uniform dress policy strictly during the 2010 – 2011 school year.

There have been a few revisions of the code for the new school year, including the addition of sweatshirts as approved attire for students to wear over uniform shirts.  Previously, only sweaters were approved.

Sweatshirts that now will be allowed must meet the same requirements as sweaters.  They must be black, navy blue or white and may not have logos, symbols, pictures or writing other than an approved school logo.

Coats and jackets worn on the school campus may not have any logos, pictures, writing or symbols other than an approved school logo and must be stored in lockers or other designated locations.  They may not be worn in class.

Another change is that the uniform code now prohibits students from wearing boots, sneakers with wheels built in or shoes that have lights.  Shoes must be solid black, brown, navy blue or white with no markings in any color, have closed toes and heels and have matching shoestrings.  Black, navy blue or white socks are required.

A change that was made in 2007 allows students in all grades to wear either white or light blue shirts.  Navy blue and royal blue are not permitted.

Golf style, dress, turtleneck and mock turtleneck shirts are allowed.  Shirts may not have ruffles or be made of shiny material.  They also should not have logos other than an approved school logo.

All shirts worn under uniform shirts must be white and may not be visible.  It is against the uniform policy to leave a shirt unbuttoned to show a tank top or T-shirt underneath.  Shirts must be tucked in and any pockets on pants must be fully visible.  Visible cleavage also is prohibited.

All students may wear black or navy blue bottoms, and high school students also may wear khaki.  Shorts should be no more than 2 inches above the knee.

Belts, which are required, must be solid black, brown or navy blue.  They may not have studs and should have a regular buckle.

No denim garments are allowed.  Denim jackets may not be worn over uniform shirts in class.

Oversized pants and shirts are not allowed.  Wearing pants below the waist, or ‘sagging” is prohibited.

Students may not wear buttons, jewelry or other accessories that have lewd, vulgar, obscene or offensive messages or pictures or which advocate or advertise the use of drugs or alcohol.  Symbols of secret societies, fraternities and sororities also are prohibited.

Gold teeth or fangs are not allowed unless required by a dentist with written documentation on file.
